The whole shopping trip started out innocently enough.  Christina and I headed to the only store that was open at the oh-so-late hour of 7:30pm on a Friday to pick up some dinner.  As were looking around, I saw something in the pastry section that I’ve seen a lot around Jeffreys’ Bay.  Here they call them mince pies.  But it’s not like the kind of mince that we think of in the states – you know, the kind that your mom always uses to make mincemeat pies.  Mince here is just like ground beef in the states.  And there are “fast food” restaurants here who have mince pies as their staple.  Think of an apple turnover form, shape and size, and then stick hamburger meat and onions in it instead of sugary, apple-y goodness.  Desiring to learn more about the culture, I’ve been wanting to get one for a while, so I decided to pick one up.

BAD IDEA.

Christina and I have been sick since Saturday morning, and we’re laying the blame squarely at the feet of the evil mince pie.  I was sick as a dog on Saturday, actually felt pretty good yesterday, and then found out that the mince pie wasn’t going down without a fight.  My wife, unfortunately, hasn’t had much of break at all from the wrath of the mince pie.  And I must admit, I’ve been much more of a wuss than she has.

All I have to say is that we’re leaving on Friday for our first anniversary trip, and the mince pie better be done by then.  I had my honeymoon ruined by forces beyond my control, and I have no intention of letting that happen again.

Stay tuned to see if revenge will be enacted…

  1. have fun/good luck/many blessings on your one year anniversary. hey remember when you spent your honeymoon handing out candy to trick or treaters in Boca? I hear that was a fun time. mince meat? next time drive to the nearest chipotle…

  2. Sorry about the fake, bogus mincemeat pie. We will think of you when we have our version at Thanksgiving! Are you guys going to do the turkey bit and all the trimmings (some of the trimmings?) for your team at Thanksgiving?
